You've been using it for years. You might still be doing this.
1. Using too much.
More balm does not mean more relief. A pea-sized amount, properly rubbed in, outperforms a thick layer sitting on the surface. The actives need contact with skin, not with each other.
2. Not rubbing it in.
Balm isn't a cream you dab on. The friction of massage warms the skin, opens the pores, and helps the actives absorb. Thirty seconds of proper rubbing changes the result.
3. Applying to broken skin.
Cuts, rashes, sunburn - never. The actives are meant for intact skin. On damaged skin they'll sting and can irritate.
4. Covering it with a tight bandage.
Occlusion traps heat and increases absorption more than intended. Let the skin breathe.
5. Touching your eyes afterwards.
The most common one. Wash your hands. Every single time.
Bonus: keep it away from children's hands and faces
