Look at the label of Menthodex Strong Pain Balm and one number stands out: Wintergreen Oil 18%. Twice the menthol. It is the workhorse of the formulation.
What it is
Wintergreen oil comes from Gaultheria - in India, largely from the Himalayan foothills. Its active compound is methyl salicylate, a close chemical relative of the salicylates that have been used for pain relief for well over a century.
What it does
Two things. It warms - gently stimulating circulation at the skin's surface, which is that "working into the muscle" feeling. And, unlike menthol, it doesn't only sit on the nerve endings; methyl salicylate is absorbed into the tissue underneath.
Why the ratio matters
Menthol alone is just cold - a sensation that fades. Wintergreen alone warms but takes longer to arrive. Together at 9% and 18%, you get relief that hits in seconds and stays.
That balance took years to get right. It's why the formulation hasn't changed.
